We are not alone in our trials

For International Women’s Day, we have interviewed five amazing women, who we admire, to learn more about what their thoughts are about motherhood, empowerment and how we can strive for equality.

Say hi again to Jennifer, a single mother of twins, widow, and owner of the account @cocoscaravan! After her husband passed away she started the community Cocos Caravan to help other people understand that they are not alone through their trials.

What’s the best part of being a mum?
When my husband was first diagnosed with cancer the doctors told us we
might not be able to have kids. When you have had a dream your whole life to be something, that is the last thing you want to hear. We had to do in-vitro fertilization in order to have kids and it wasn’t an easy process. When our first round didn’t work I had never been so depressed. I had never wanted something more in my entire life. I desperately wanted to be a mother. I love being a mother. I love watching them grow and experience new things. The first time they learned a word I had never been so proud. I love experiencing life all over again through their eyes. Suddenly everything in my life is exciting again. Going sledding, taking them to Disneyland, going to the park, etc. They brought a new light and energy into my life that I never knew I needed. People don’t lie though when they say this is the toughest job you will ever have. Some days are hard and on those days I count down the minutes until bedtime. On those hard days, I think back to the moment when the doctors told me that I might not be able to have kids. I was devastated and more than ever I knew that being a Mother is what I wanted. This helps me to stay strong and enjoy every moment! Motherhood is hard but so rewarding!

How can the world be better at empowering women and strive for equality
I think we can do better by supporting each other! Life is hard enough, so by
lifting each other up it can make life that much easier. After I shared my story of being a widow and single mom of twins I had so many people reach out to me. They shared similar trials they had been going through and it helped me to know that I wasn’t alone. I realized that everyone has something they are dealing with. We are not alone in this world and we can be there for each other to get through it!

What does your Birth Poster mean to you?
The Birth Poster means so much to me! My husband had been suffering from cancer for a long time. He got really sick a couple of months before the twins were born and I wasn’t sure if he would make it to their birth. After the twins were born life was really hectic. My husband needed a lot of care, I was recovering from a c-section, and had newborn twins to take care of. Even with a lot of help from our friends and family, it was a lot to deal with. I didn’t get a lot of opportunities to slow down and soak in those special newborn moments. I feel like I don’t remember a lot during those first few months. This is why the birth poster means so much to me. It gives me a chance to remember their exact size when they were firstborn. When I look at the poster it only brings back the happy moments of that time. My husband was able to spend a couple of months with them before he passed away. I think of the times he got to hold them and be with them when they were that size. It means the world to me!
